The Tūī and the Rātā — Keeper of the Living Flame
According to an old story carried on the forest wind, the rātā once kept its crimson flowers closed, guarding a spark of the forest’s first fire. Only the tūī dared approach, saying, “The forest has a song, but part of its song is sleeping.” Rātā opened its flowers and tūī drank the nectar, receiving the red fire into its voice and gaining its extraordinary songs of bells, whistles, clicks and calls. In return, tūī promised to carry rātā’s voice throughout Aotearoa. Two drops of pale light settled upon its throat as white feathers, marking the promise. And so whenever the rātā flowers and the tūī comes to drink, their ancient agreement is renewed: the rātā raises the living flame, and the tūī gives the flame a voice.
